Conventional carbon steel bolts are a natural mismatch for magnesium and aluminum substrates: corrosion, loosening and insufficient strength have long troubled vehicle makers and parts suppliers. Existing 6056 aluminum bolts (about 420MPa) ease some of the corrosion problem, but their strength ceiling is too low to handle the high torque and high loads of the e-drive, battery and motor systems.

To fill this industry gap, YF Zhichengjia Precision Hardware (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., drawing on more than twenty years of fastener R&D and manufacturing, has independently developed the ZT68-600MPa cold-forged high-strength 7xxx modified aluminum alloy bolt, putting steel strength into an aluminum weight and offering an integrated solution for magnesium-aluminum lightweight joints.

2. Three fatal flaws of conventional bolts in lightweight applications

Pain point 1: Galvanic corrosion, a steel bolt on magnesium or aluminum is slow self-destruction Magnesium's electrode potential is as low as -1.6V versus about -0.44V for carbon steel, a huge difference once the two are in contact. In damp, water-exposed or condensing conditions the magnesium substrate acts as the anode and corrodes quickly, producing white rust, decayed threads and peeling or leaking housings, which seriously affects joint durability and vehicle safety.

Pain point 2: Thermal expansion mismatch, preload keeps draining away at high temperature The coefficient of thermal expansion of magnesium alloy is about twice that of steel. In high-temperature cyclic environments such as engines and transmissions, the steel bolt and the magnesium substrate deform differently, preload keeps decaying and eventually leads to loosening, seal failure and driving noise; a grade 10.9 carbon steel bolt can lose more than 96% of its preload at 150℃.

Pain point 3: Insufficient strength, 6056 aluminum bolts cannot take the torque of e-drive systems Existing 6056 (AL9) aluminum alloy bolts reach about 420MPa tensile and about 350MPa yield, with limited load capacity. They cannot meet the high torque, high load and long life demanded by new energy e-drive systems, which has become a technical chokepoint for the large-scale rollout of magnesium lightweighting.

3. The ZT68 answer: a 630MPa high-strength aluminum bolt

ZT68 is an ultra-high-strength 7xxx modified aluminum alloy developed in house by YF Zhichengjia. By precisely controlling the precipitation of Mg, Zn and Cu strengthening phases together with a precision solution, quenching and aging heat treatment, it achieves about 630MPa tensile strength and about 500MPa yield strength, matching grade 6.8 carbon steel bolts across the board while retaining more than 8% elongation, strong without being brittle.

Benchmarked against a mainstream M8×40 hex flange bolt, ZT68 delivers across-the-board gains over mainstream 6056 aluminum bolts:

Property ZT68 high-strength aluminum bolt Mainstream 6056 (AL9) 420MPa aluminum bolt Improvement
Tensile strength Rm about 630MPa about 420MPa about 50% higher
Yield strength Rp0.2 about 500MPa about 350MPa about 43% higher
Elongation ≥8% (measured mean 8.21%) ≥6% High strength with toughness
Long-term service temperature stable service at 150℃ 150℃ Over 95% strength retention at high temperature

4. Four core values of ZT68

· Extreme lightweighting: aluminum has a density of only 2.7g/cm³, so at the same size the weight is about one third of a steel bolt, cutting weight by up to 65%; fasteners on a single transmission alone can save 0.5~1kg, and volume installation makes a clear contribution to lower vehicle weight and longer range.

· No galvanic corrosion: the potential matches magnesium and aluminum substrates, so the driving force for galvanic corrosion is very low and the substrate corrosion typical of steel-on-magnesium joints is eliminated at the root. With anodized surface treatment, parts pass 60 days of neutral salt spray testing reliably, show excellent intergranular corrosion resistance and suit high-humidity applications such as e-drive systems and battery packs.

· Resistance to relaxation at high temperature: the coefficient of thermal expansion is close to that of magnesium alloy, so the bolt deforms in step with the substrate through thermal cycling and preload loss is far lower than with steel bolts; after 12 hours of continuous exposure at 150℃, tensile strength stays above 600MPa, suiting high-temperature applications such as motor housings and ECU assemblies.

· Assembly-friendly: one-piece flange cold heading integrates bolt and washer, removing the second assembly step of fitting a washer; a graded lubrication system holds the total friction coefficient at 0.09~0.15 with low torque scatter, suiting fully automated assembly lines.

5. Fully in-house manufacturing, quality controlled end to end

ZT68 overcomes the industry barrier that made high-strength bolts hard to cold-head from aluminum alloy at volume, using a complete process chain: one-piece cold heading, cleaning and pretreatment, precision heat treatment strengthening, high-precision thread rolling after heat, second cleaning, and surface treatment plus final inspection.

· One-piece cold heading: the flange is formed in a single step, keeping metal flow lines intact, eliminating the second washer assembly step and reducing part count and inventory cost;

· Precision heat treatment: solution, quenching and aging promote precipitation of strengthening phases and greatly improve mechanical properties; · Thread rolling after heat: uniform residual compressive stress forms in the thread roots, effectively offsetting service tensile stress and markedly improving fatigue strength;

· Surface treatment: friction coefficient is precisely controlled, with options such as anodizing and lubricating coatings; YF Zhichengjia runs its own complete lines for tooling development, cold heading, thread rolling, machining, heat treatment, surface treatment, automated assembly and optical sorting, with no outsourced processing; the company is equipped with metallographic microscopes, universal tensile testers, friction coefficient testers and a full set of precision inspection instruments, so all mechanical, corrosion and thermal stability tests can be completed in house.
