DetailsThread Insert Selection Guide
1. By substrate strength
For aluminium, zinc alloy and castings prefer wire or self-tapping inserts; for moulded parts use brass or aluminium inserts.
2. By installation method
For automated volume installation choose tangless inserts, which need no tang removal; for manual repair use standard tanged types with the dedicated tool.
3. By locking need
Choose key-locking inserts where rotation must be prevented; standard types for general reinforcement; thin-wall parts take thin-wall inner-outer sleeves.
4. By material and environment
Stainless as standard; brass where electrical or thermal conductivity is needed; aluminium inserts for lightweighting and galvanic-corrosion-sensitive joints.
5. Thread repair
Stripped threads in aluminium housings can be repaired quickly with wire inserts, restoring the original thread size without replacing the part.
Typical Applications
3C metal housings
Thread reinforcement in aluminium and magnesium housings for repeated assembly
Die-cast inserts
Brass and aluminium inserts moulded in, thread formed in one step
Thread repair
Wire insert repair of stripped aluminium threads to original size
Motors and end caps
High-strength threaded joints in aluminium end caps and valve bodies
Moulds and fixtures
Lifting-hole and locating-thread reinforcement
Automotive lightweighting

Thread Insert FAQ
Q1Wire insert or self-tapping insert — how do I choose?
Wire inserts suit reinforcement and repair of a standard threaded hole and leave a standard internal thread. Self-tapping inserts cut their own thread in the substrate and screw in, which suits high-volume aluminium parts with higher efficiency.
Q2Do inserts extend thread life in aluminium?
Yes. The internal thread formed by a wire insert is far harder than the aluminium substrate, greatly extending repeated assembly life and improving load distribution in the thread.
Q3Are special tools needed?
Wire inserts need a dedicated installation tool (manual or electric); self-tapping inserts normally use an electric or pneumatic tool with a dedicated chuck; moulded inserts are pressed in or heat-set depending on design.
Q4Which materials and finishes are available?
Stainless, zinc-plated carbon steel, aluminium and brass as standard, with finishes to requirement and material certificates and inspection reports supplied.
Q5What is the advantage of tangless inserts?
No tang has to be broken off after installation, so there is no risk of a loose tang jamming the assembly — ideal for automated volume installation and deep or blind holes.
Q6Can you make non-standard inserts to drawing?
Yes — special thread sizes, profiles and combined inner-outer designs can be made to drawing with fast sample validation.
